When do babies stop pushing food out so they can start bringing it in?
Posted by: Baby Food Grinder / Category: baby food questionsMy baby is 5 months old now and every time I try to feed her a small bowl of cereal she is still pushing the food out. I thought she would have stopped by now, but she hasn’t.

this is a sign…
it means she is not ready for solid food yet
try again in a few weeks
the tongue muscle naturally reverses its action (and takes food into the mouth) around 6 months.

anywhere from 41/2 to 6 months old. just be patient she’ll get it. it’s a big change for her!

It may be too early for solid foods for your gal. You know western culture pushes solid food at an earlier age than most countries do. Try waiting a month or so and then give it another shot. I bet it would be a success. She will be fine without cereal, especially if your nursing. Sounds like her push reflex has not disappeared yet. Lots of Luck

The tongue thrust reflex a baby is born with begins to subside at varying ages. Each baby is different. Some babies can eat off a spoon as early as 3 months while others are 6-7 months or even older before they are willing or able to eat from a spoon. If your 5 month old is still pushing out food, wait a couple weeks and try again. She may even be like our youngest daughter who didn’t eat anything other than breast milk until she was nearly 7 months old. We rarely fed her from a spoon, but she preferred to pick up bits of food from her high chair and feed herself. There is no big hurry to introduce solids as breast milk (or formula) provides the majority of a baby’s nutritional needs for the first year of life.

She’s old enough to eat from the spoon, despite what other people say. It just takes time, a few days to a week. Don’t give up. Good luck
