When can you start giving them food off your plate?

Posted by: Baby Food Grinder  /  Category: baby food questions

My daughter is 7 1/2 months old and has the pincer grasps. She picks it up very well. She’s been eating baby food since 4 months and she eats puffs, yoghurt melts (cut in half). I still get nervous when she eats puffs lol but its the generic one because those are half the size of gerber. I know shes suppose to be bottle fed until 1 year.

Keep on giving her milk but it sounds like she is interested in solid food. I would start giving her mild, easy to eat solid food. Cut the pieces small and watch her while she eats to make sure she doesn’t choke. Such a fun time when they are this small. Good luck!

Sounds like she’s ready! When they show interest in what you’re eating and start grabbing food off your plate is when you can start introducing table foods.

Make sure the food is soft and mushy and cut up small. Cooked potato, carrots, peas, mushrooms, rice, baby shell pasta, soft fruit like banana, mango, avocado, soft breads (no crust), etc.

I give my daughter bits of food off my plate, just little bites. My sister gave her a piece of toasted bread and she did fine although I was nervous. Also how does your daughter do with the yogert melts? I bought some but they seem like perfect choking size so I haven’t given them to her yet.

if she can hold her head up well and sit up with support then she is ready. You can give her just about anything, as long as it is soft enough that she can mash it with her gums. Avocado, banana or mashed potatoes are good to start.

We started transitioning from Baby foods (most of which we made ourself from our steamed vegetables, etc that we eat) to Table foods (cut to pea size) at 9 mos, slowly and gradually finding foods that we eat, that the baby enjoys too. Still feeding him some puree’s, but he’s getting lots of table foods now as well.

    Hope this helps!
    Best Wishes!!

I think they let you know when they are ready by grabbing at food. It is great to start with soft mushy stuff like pieces of banana and sweet potato. Pay attention and see how she does!
