When can you start feeding your baby table food?
Posted by: Baby Food Grinder / Category: baby food questionsMy daughter is 5 months. When can I start feeding her table food and what types of table foods are healthy for her to eat? It’s been 10 years since I had a child so I forgot some things about when to feed a baby table food. And what not to feed her?

It depends on what it is. You can feed mashed potatoes, etc. as early as 6 months. But most table foods, you should wait till 9-11 months.

This is what we did. Around 6 months we went from 100% breast milk to adding some banana’s to the mix. Table bood didn’t happen until about 8 months. Peas, etc. Soft foods.

blended foods, fruits and veggies… when she gets teeth, keep it soft.. anything that you buy in the jars, you can feed her in whole, when she gets her teeth

There is no absolute turn on time. Whenever you feel it is right and the child seems to want it. They will usually let you know if you closely observe them.
Edit
I have a low tolerance for experts and pundits. Dr Spock admitted he was wrong on many things before he died. How many others are wrong also?

Take cues from your baby, if she seems ready, try it. Soft fruits, veggies and breads are good starters.

Well you can start feeding her tablefood as soon as she shows intrest in it. However onyl certain foods should be given to an infant and in very small amouts. Fruits and veggies are ok. Soft foods like Mashed potatoes, jello, ect. Dont give her any food with sugar, or alot of saturated fat. Babies love bananas…try those.

Like the other answerers said, soft things like steamed veggies, bananas, applesauce. You are supposed to avoid eggs and cow’s milk and honey until they are 1 year old, I know.
And, I have heard that a person is better off to feed veggies first to help the baby develop a taste for them before feeding sweet fruit. My friend’s baby got fruit first, and wouldn’t touch vegetables afterward!

as long as the pieces are small (about pea-sized), she can start around 8 or 9 months. gerber makes the stage 3 foods with really small, soft chunks to help them learn to chew. we gave our son those first and slowly added in actual table food. we also bought the gerber graduates puffs for him to have as a snack. they get really soft in his mouth and teaches him to chew at the same time. there are a whole lot of little foods now to help with the transition from baby food to grownup food.

Any food that has no spices, butter, margarine, etc in it…and can be mashed to a creamy consistancy…I used to make all my own baby foods as far as veggies…carrots, green beans, peas, yellow squash, no skins, sweet potato thinned with formula….if you have a blender or a food processor that’s great……puree the steamed or boiled veggies ( I reccomend steaming until very soft, more of the nutrients are retained with steaming) and then puree…peas need to be strained because of the skins…..spoon into a clean ice cube tray & freeze, then place into freezer bags…will keep up to 6 months and you just use the amount of cubes needed for each meal……..but for now start off on banana-very ripe and well mashed….and apple sauce, rice baby cereal for now…..thin with formula and as baby get used to it thicken the consistancy…start with cereal first and add each new food slowly and one at a time….
…stay away from spicy foods and eggs, and anything with peanuts until dr says okay……and I would hold off for another month on the foods anyway…six months is a good age to slowly introduce them….good luck.

When she shows in interest in you eating (opening her mouth, grabbing at what you are eating, etc..) I used the jarred stage one foods to start as it was easier for checking for allergies (who wants a freezer full of sweet potatoes if baby is allergic!) then moved on to making my own. Take a walk through the produce section and check out the vegetable list on Wikipedia. My guy loves rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, squash, pumpkin, etc…
Then again on Valentines day he grabbed a spring roll out of my hand and had a bite – guess we know he’s not allergic to shrimp now LOL.
