If you read the ingredients on the baby food, you'll see that they list "green beans" for example, and water, and that's it. There are people who feel that that's unhealthy. Not at all. There are other food sources that are healthier, but there's nothing unhealthy about most store-bought fruit and veggies that list just the fruit, veggies, and water as the ingredients.

It would be even healthier if you're able to make the food yourself. Fresh vegetables do lose some of their nutrients over time. So if you can buy fresh produce, and have the time to process it and freeze it, then you can make your own baby food and it will be healthier than store bought. I tried this with my first child, and soon realized that I'd rather spend my time playing with my baby and sleeping.

There is nothing unhealthy about store bought baby food. I made my daughters food, but I ate store bought baby food when I was a baby, and I was perfectly healthy. If it was unhealthy, they wouldn't be able to sell it. I just happen to love to cook. I also wanted my daughter to try different foods that she probably wouldn't with store bought baby foods, like brocolli, eggplant, and mangos. Also, I didn't want to freak out if I ever ran out, we always have fruits and veggies in our house.

I don't know what people are talking about.I was unaware that there was anything wrong with it. I think that the baby food in the jars are perfectly fine! My girl are 2 and 4 and I gave it to them! They are perfectly healthy and thriving girls. And I plan on giving it to my 9 weeker when hes old enough. The way I see it if gerber or beechnut is making it especially for babies they would never make it harmful to them! Quite frankly I think that its none of anybody's business what you feed your son as long as your not abusing or neglecting him! Don't worry about negative comments you do what you feel is best for your son!

I believe it is a personal choice, not all moms have the time to make baby food. I personally did but I am a stay at home mom with only one baby so I had LOTS of time.

The reason people are against it is because of the processing. The more you process a food, the more nutrients it looses and even when you add them back in at the end its technically not as healthy as what mother nature put in to begin with.

they are still healthy, and if your mixing it in with table food then even better! The WIC program in my state just added them to our checks and you can rest assured that they wouldn't put anything bad for our kids on there.

Remember a lot of moms feel the need to put you down so they can feel better about themselves and their parenting style.

as long as there are no additives like corn syrup there is nothing wrong with it.

to all the bug comments:if the worst thing your baby eats in life is few bugs then your doing pretty damn good! its just a little extra protien.

This made me laugh because beech nut raisin granola cereal is my 8 month olds absolute FAVOURITE food. She would eat it for every meal if i let her. I don't think that there is anything bad in baby's food but I have noticed that my daughter likes baby food that i make in a food mill way better than store bought stuff. I wonder if whatever they use to clean the foods in factories or whatever, tastes bad to the kids. With all the crap in our food like trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, wood starch, and all that other stuff that companies are allowed to feed us, I would think baby food is probably the healthiest thing in a grocery store next to the actual fruits and vegetables.

my daughter has baby food at lunch times and home cooked food for dinner in the evening - i dont have a problem with it at all - seeing as i eat unhealthy lunches say a microwave meal or a buger or something or sometihng dairy she cant have (she has milk allergy) then its cheaper and quick for me to give her a jar than to buy ingredients and make her her own meal every lunch time - the ones i buy say no preservatives, no added salt etc etc..

Well, some babies don't like it. And many adults don't like it because it doesn't have much flavor. (It's heavily cooked, and has no salt or seasonings. So it tastes somewhat like overcooked, unsalted canned fruits and veggies.)

And no, it isn't unhealthy either. (Most babies on jarred foods are still getting 99% of their nutrients from formula or breastmilk, so the slight loss of vitamins that comes from the cooking and canning process is pretty irrelvent.)

Do what works for you. Babies are on purees for such a short time (and, as noted, they contribute such a small percentage of baby's nutrition) that it really doesn't matter. Some moms like to make their own because they want it to be organic, or they want to have better control over the ingredients, or they want to save money.

EDIT: Diet C: There are NO preservatives in babyfood. There dont' have to be, because the canning process preseves the food. And, except for a few desserts and toddler foods, there are no salt or sugar in them either. (Read the label. Stage one foods, and most stage 2 foods are just 'the food' and water.)

I think table foods are more nutritious than baby foods. I have tasted the baby foods and they are nasty. But a baby wouldn't know the difference.
You aren't' lazy for feeding him baby foods. that's just insane.
