My 14 month old will only eat baby oatmeal and mashed potatoes!

Posted by: Baby Food Grinder  /  Category: baby food questions

My 14 month old son refuses to eat anything that has more texture than baby oatmeal (the single-grain stuff) and mashed potatoes. I’ve been trying to feed him the regular oatmeal we buy for ourselves (I don’t make it too thick), but he will not eat it, he spits it right out. I even have a food grinder and grind foods up that his older brother eats, but he still won’t eat it. What can I do?

Do you sit with him at meal times and eat along with him? Setting a good example usually encourages children to do the same as you. At this age he should be eating solid foods.

Try giving him the same foods that you eat except with no spices or extra flavors added to it. He may still be sensitive to the taste of certain foods.

If he’s hungry enough he’ll eat it.

Give him something that tastes really good. He will want to eat it.

Sister, I feel your pain. My son was a little meat and potato eater at 12 months, then slipped into this really picky mush and crackers only phase around 14 months. What helped my kid is peer pressure, I work full time and he goes to daycare, once he went to the toddler room and saw everyone else doing it, he went along, though not at home with us. It’s hard for us cause he is underweight, making it harder to say well, he’ll just eat when he eats.
My advice: feed him one nutritious high calorie food per day that you know he likes, like say, full fat yogurt. And keep trying with the other stuff. And hope he notices brother and follows suit. If it’s any help, this seems to be a common phase for boys this age.

Your son might be having texture aversion. My son is 18 months old and still eats only pureed food and baby oatmeal cereal. He gags on everything else. He is seeing a occupational therapist since few weeks who is working on his feeding issues. I see a little progress now. Since your son is only 14 months now, give him a few more months. He might probably start eating everything in a few months. Or try to get a referral from your pediatrician to a speech/occupational therapist.

Maybe try using the food grinder to add other flavors slowly to what he’s eating. Add a little bit of ground bananas to his oatmeal. A little bit of meat to his mashed potatoes. Use a lot of variety. Over time as he adjusts to the flavors, start to add more of the other foods and less of the mashed potatoes or oatmeal.
