How do I get my 9 month old to try solid bites of food without gagging?

Posted by: Baby Food Grinder  /  Category: baby food questions

He has eaten baby food just fine and those Gerber puffs (banana) but now that I am trying little bites of table foods (banana, soft fruits, etc) he gags and throws up. He has 7 teeth. Any help is appreciated.

Probably just doesn’t like the taste. Maybe you can mush the bananas with baby cereal to make it a little more bland.

He might just not be ready yet. Give him more time.

One of my twins is like that. She took a long time before she could eat really well.

How small are the pieces you are trying him with? Maybe he just needs them to be very very small and then gradually work his way up to being able to pick them up with his own fingers. Good luck!

Maybe you need to make them smaller. Sometimes I had to make Lola’s food small to the point of it might as well have been mashed. Or, he might not be ready yet. Either way.

Maybe try something less slippery, like little pieces of bread? Also, is she picking up lots of little pieces at the same time and cramming them all in her mouth before swallowing first? More time might be the answer though. Just keep her practicing with the puffs or with cheerios (=cheaper).

try making the bites smaller. I had the same problem. My daughter just now got the hang of it and shes 1 1/5. Take your time. Your baby may not be ready.

My son was like that in ways…or I guess I admit apart of it was ME who worried about him gagging and throwing up or choking too. Don’t rush it. There is NO rush to get them to eat things like that. Have you moved up from the cereals and stage 1 foods yet? If so, the stage 2′s and 3′s in baby food have small chunks in the food that in my opinion is easier for them to learn on. Also, we used cheerios are one of his first table foods. I would set a handful on his high-chair tray and let him just play with them, explore them, suck on them, whatever, it was his choice…and we ALWAYS made sure he was upright in his highchair when trying any new solid bites as aposed to his car seat or sitting on the floor moving around. I know sometimes the baby snacks can be more pricey then then the food you get for yourself, but I still think it’s worth it, their made for certain age groops for a reason. If you can find them, try MUM MUMs, their a rice cracker that litterally just disinagratges in your babies mouth but also helps them hold, chew, and learn. I got mine in the baby section at my local Walmart by the Gerber Graduate snacks etc.

A question too, besides Banana, what other fruit are you trying? Some might be way too acidic for your babies taste such as orange or strawberry….other than that, most others are too hard anyhow.
