Do you make your own baby food? What do you use?

Posted by: Baby Food Grinder  /  Category: baby food questions

Hi ladies!

My twins are only 4 months old, so I still have time before they are on solids (we are not even on cereal yet), but I am a planner!

I am intending to make our own baby food (probably not all of it but at least some of it). My mom got us a cookbook and kit with trays to freeze the baby food for Christmas.

My question is what do you use to puree? Some people say a blender, others say a food processor will work and still others say that a food mill is a must.

So what do you recommend or use to puree your baby food?

Thanks in advance!

I used a hand-held potato masher for the vegetables and a nice sharp knife to shred the meats to oblivion. It’s good exercise.

Small kitchen, no space for a food processor!

I used both a blender and a food processor. I think it depends on the quality of your blender or processor. I used the blender (which was able to puree with no chunks in the food) at the beginning when she first started, and then moved to the food processor as she was got older.

Since you’re doing some research, consider researching baby led weaning and using that rather than parent led weaning. This way you don’t need to worry about actually making special baby food, and your babies will grow and develop better.

Honestly, a baby who is old enough for solids doesn’t need food to be pureed, so really anything you want to use is fine. There is no "special" consistency food needs to be, so use whatever you’re comfortable with.

I used to use my blender, until it broke. Now I just manually shred, mash, chop etc..

It really gets easier the more you do it and the older the children get.

When my older son was a baby I made some of his baby food by hand. I used a blender to make applesauce. I mashed bananas for him by hand. You can also use a mixer for carrots and potatoes. Adding some warm water to the vegetables helps make it thin enough for baby to eat.

Sweet potatoes and pears. You can wrap them up in foil and put them in the oven. When they are done place them in a blender to puree them.

I started out with a blender. It worked great, but I burnt out the motor (it was a few years old). I bought a food processor/mini chopper combo and I find it doesn’t puree some things quite as smoothly (peas and beans/green beans), but having both is great. I definitely recommend having two options for fixing your food. I have a food mill and I will use that, but not until my little guy is older and eating more textured foods. The food mill I have is a portable hand-operated one, so it will be good for eating out.

I use a handheld blender, that’s prob the best to start off with as it mashes the food right up. The food mills don’t make it as smooth as a blender i don’t think, so that’s prob better when the baby is use to food and you want to leave it a bit lumpier.

My friend had baby 6 months ago, she bulk does her veg, liquidise it puts into small pots and freezes it. For breakfast she gives her weetabix with some banana mashed into it.lunch frozen veg with chicken added. Hope this helps hun xx

I have made my own baby food for my older children. Carets, green beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, apple, almost anything that can blend (blender) the food into a soft smooth texture.

BTW- Have have twins. They were premature. Born at 28 weeks. 9/27/08. Both came home around xmas. They are three months old but look like they are newborns. Were your twins early?
