At what age did you start giving your baby more food and less formula?
Posted by: Baby Food Grinder / Category: baby food questionsMy daughter is 7 months old, and I want to start giving her more food, either jar or homemade and start cutting down her formula consumption. How much do I cut the formula down to and how much food do I give her?

you can offer her more food, but you don’t need to cut down her formula until she’s 1.

I’ve read and heard from the Ped. that your baby’s food at this age should be formula/breast milk about 98% of it. At that age I fed my son like 2 or 3 times a day. Fruits or Veggies.

For me its pretty much in direct proportion. My daughter is 6 months.
The baby containers are 2 1/2 oz. So instead of a 6 oz bottle of formula, I give her a tub of food (she eats all 2 1/2 oz) and a 4 oz bottle.
At first it doesn’t cut down but I noticed if she consistently gets her solids, she starts to calm down a little bit on the formula and doesn’t need it every 2 hours on the dot– she’ll go 20-30 mintues longer between feedings even when her last feeding didn’t include solids.
At 7 months she can have 2-3 servings per day of solids.
You’ll be able to tell how much to cut down. Just give her the solids first and then wash it down with a bottle, and she’ll stop when she’s full. After a few days of this you;ll know how much to make for the bottle.

At 7 months your baby still needs most of its calories to come from fat (and the fat being Formula) the baby food is just to get her used to textures and tastes, and is really not too important nutritionally yet. I would say at around 9 or 10 months when your baby is more actively feeding herself and interested in foods then cut back on the formula. At 11 months I was giving my twins 3 8 oz bottles a day, at 10 months I think I was giving them 4 bottles (three 8 oz and one 6 oz)
If your baby is still on baby foods then I would give her 1 jar total of fruit and 1 jar total of veggies a day…maybe a little more depending on how she eats and some rice cereal as well. Try giving her a cracker and see if she can start feeding herself.

This is a really good time to start, because she should switch to whole milk anyways by the time she’s 12 months old. Try by replacing a bottle with some cereal mixed with a stage 2 fruit….That’s why i do in the morning since she gets up so early and is hungry. Slowly cut down the bottles and replace with sippy cups (two birds with one stone!!)
Good luck

There is no precise age to start solids. It all depends on the size and development of your child. I usually say at about 7 months, but it might be before or after. Try using the established amount of milk in the food. e.g. To start with, maybe use baby rice for breakfast. To make this, use the milk from the breakfast bottle and they can drink the rest. Then you know that they are getting that amount at least, plus the rice. You may find you’d like to start solids at tea time instead. If so, do the same and then when that is going well, introduce puried tasty veg or fruit.
